The American Peony Society is the foremost expert on peonies in the world. So many great minds have contributed to the collective knowledge of this agency.

For more than 100 years, the APS has awarded both people and peonies that go above and beyond.

The Gold Medal

The “Gold Medal” is awarded annually for peonies exhibiting outstanding floral qualities and in recent years has also been designated  “Peony of the Year.”  These peonies are excellent for gardeners wishing to have plants that produce outstanding flowers for use as cut flowers, arranging or simple visual enjoyment.

The Award of Landscape Merit

Award of Landscape Merit peonies are recognized for their excellence of plant habit in the landscape.  Peonies with this award designation are stellar performers and superior garden plants.

There is also the Award of distinction, which “recognizes peonies which exhibit unique and valuable advancements in plant and flower characteristics.” (APS)

Personal awards are given to hybridizers, APS Board members, Growers, peony ambassadors, authors and others who have devoted their time to promoting and furthering the peony.

And finally, Best in Show and Exhibition awards are given at the APS annual flower show each year.

Award winners are certainly not the only outstanding peonies in this world. But they are a great place to start for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.
