With the start of a new season there are some questions that frequently come up this time of year.
What are bare root peonies?
Bare root peonies are fresh dug from their fields when the growing and flower buds have matured and the roots are dormant. They are washed, divided and packed without soil since they will be going directly into your garden. You will be planting them as soon as they arrive in the mail.
When will my peonies arrive?
All bare root peonies are shipped in fall, at the ideal time for planting. We typically start to dig the roots in mid to late September and begin shipping in late September or early October. Weather is the biggest factor on this timing as we need the roots to be dormant and well-hydrated before harvest can begin.
How big are the roots you ship?
We ship 3-5 eye roots, which are the industry standard. That means there are 3-5 dormant buds, or “eyes” on each root.
Why do we pay for the peonies before they ship?
Ordering your peonies early in the year ensures the best selection for some of the more rare varieties. Paying for your roots at the time of order reserves them for you so no one else can purchase them.
